Pillars of Heracles is a heavy 1–4 player civilization game set in Archaic Greece, combining rondel action selection, deck-building, area control, city development, mythology, resource management, and asymmetric city-states. Your action cards determine how you advance around the rondel, your evolving deck changes which options you can reach efficiently, and the map gives those choices consequences as cities expand, armies move, trade develops, and rival powers compete for influence across the Greek world.
A Civilization Game Built Around Movement and Timing
Pillars of Heracles has plenty of systems, but the rondel is the piece that keeps pulling them together. You cannot simply choose any action whenever you want. Your cards and current position determine how efficiently you can reach the action you need next.
That makes sequencing matter. Building a better deck is partly about acquiring stronger effects, but it is also about making your civilization more flexible. A card that gets you to the right part of the rondel at the right moment can be just as important as one with a dramatic ability printed on it.
The map then makes those timing choices public. Other city-states are expanding too, and territory, cities, military units, trade, and influence all create reasons to care about what everyone else is doing.
History, Mythology, and Different Ways to Play
The setting mixes the political world of Archaic Greece with its mythology rather than treating either as decoration. Demigods, Titans, and Olympians can become part of your developing tableau, while city-state abilities give the historical powers different strategic identities.
The box also includes several gameplay modes, including shorter introductory options and solo material. That does not turn Pillars of Heracles into a light game, but it does give players a more sensible route into a system with a lot going on.
How the Game Works
Your city-state begins with its own board, units, buildings, and asymmetric ability. During an Advance Turn, Action cards move your marker around the central rondel and determine which action you can perform. Those actions develop your position on both your player board and the shared map.
You can establish and improve cities, move forces through land and sea regions, compete for area influence, trade and manage resources, add cards to your deck, and build a tableau of Mythology powers that provide additional abilities.
City-state tiles, strategy options, Prophecies, and mythological cards create long-term directions, but the map remains contested. An efficient economic plan still has to account for rival expansion and military pressure.
Different game modes adjust the length and additional systems in play, including dedicated solo content and scenario material. The result is a civilization game that can emphasize development, conflict, mythology, or a mixture of all three depending on how the table evolves.
Why You’ll Love It
- The rondel makes action timing an important part of the strategy rather than a menu of unrestricted choices.
- Deck-building supports your civilization plan while also changing how efficiently you move through the action system.
- Area control and movement keep rival city-states relevant to one another throughout the game.
- Historical Greek city-states combine naturally with Demigods, Titans, Olympians, and Prophecies.
- Asymmetric powers and several strategic systems leave room for very different approaches to development.
- Multiple modes, including solo and shorter introductory play, give a large game more than one way onto the table.
