Ace of Spades

Ace of Spades: Revised Edition is a solo or two-player cooperative card game that turns poker hands into gunfights against a procession of supernatural enemies. Your path through Sweet Haven, Arizona leads from the cemetery all the way into Hell, with 12 increasingly dangerous opponents standing between you and the necromancer Lord Overkill. Pairs, straights, flushes, and stronger poker combinations become attacks, while defeated enemies can leave behind abilities that help with the duels still ahead.

Your Best Weapon Is a Better Hand

You do not need to be a poker expert. You do need to look at a hand of cards and decide what it can realistically become before your limited actions run out.

A pair barely scratches an enemy. Better combinations inflict increasingly serious damage, with the strongest hands capable of ending encounters dramatically. The problem is familiar to anyone who has ever chased a poker hand: the card that would make everything work is usually somewhere else in the deck.

Enemy powers make that probability puzzle less comfortable as the campaign progresses.

How the Game Works

A game consists of a sequence of duels against 12 enemies of increasing difficulty. Each enemy has its own health and rules, and you have a limited number of plays in which to defeat it.

Draw from the specially illustrated poker deck and form traditional poker combinations to attack. The stronger the hand, the more damage you inflict. Managing what to play, discard, preserve, and pursue becomes the central puzzle of each fight.

Some defeated enemies grant powers that can be carried forward, gradually giving you more tools as the opposition becomes nastier. Difficulty options and additional challenges let experienced players make the journey harder once they understand the underlying system.

Solo is the game's primary mode, while two players can tackle the same supernatural Western campaign cooperatively.
