Arkham Horror: Lovecraft Letter takes the draw-one, play-one deduction of Love Letter and adds a very Arkham problem: forbidden knowledge is useful. This 2–6 player card game begins each round with every investigator Sane, but playing Other World cards can drive you Insane. That unlocks stronger card effects and potentially spectacular plays, while also forcing increasingly dangerous Sanity checks that can knock you out of the round before your clever plan gets anywhere.
Going Insane Is a Strategy. Briefly.
If you already know Love Letter, the basic rhythm will feel familiar almost immediately. Hold one card, draw another, choose which to play, and use its effect to learn about or eliminate your opponents.
The sanity system changes what those familiar decisions mean. Arkham cards have straightforward Sane abilities. Other World cards can push you into Insanity, at which point you gain access to alternate, often much stronger effects. Unfortunately, every Other World card in your discard pile also makes future Sanity checks worse.
You can absolutely become more powerful by embracing the Mythos. The Mythos has opinions about how long that arrangement should last.
How the Game Works
On a turn, draw one card so that you have two in hand, then play one. While Sane, you resolve its Sane effect. Once an Other World card enters your discard area, you become Insane for the rest of that round and may choose the more aggressive Insane effects printed on eligible cards.
Before each later turn while Insane, you make a Sanity check by revealing cards from the deck based on how many Other World cards you have accumulated. Reveal another Other World card during that check and you are out of the round.
A round normally ends when only one investigator remains or the deck empties. Surviving players compare their final card values, and round winners receive Mythos tokens reflecting whether they won Sane or Insane.
This 2025 edition reworks the earlier Lovecraft Letter into the Arkham Horror setting with updated terminology, rules, artwork, and presentation while keeping the central sane-versus-insane gamble intact.
Why You’ll Love It
- Keeps Love Letter's fast turns and tiny hand size while adding a second layer of push-your-luck decisions.
- Going Insane unlocks genuinely stronger effects rather than serving as flavor text.
- Sanity checks make that power increasingly dangerous the longer you rely on it.
- Visible discard piles reward players who pay attention to what is still possible.
- Rounds take only about 15 minutes, so an unfortunate encounter with Cthulhu does not ruin the evening.
