Command the fast, vicious Kontio or the heavily armed Hammerhead across a hex battlefield, manage movement and firing positions, roll attacks, and watch damage accumulate across individual sections of your BattleMech. Everything needed for your first battles is in the box, while the included record sheets begin introducing equipment and concepts that lead naturally into the full BattleTech system.

BattleTech has spent decades earning its reputation as a detailed game of giant-robot combat. The Starter Box keeps the part everybody came for and deliberately strips away the systems you do not need during your first fight.

You still care about range. You still care about movement. You still care very much about which direction your opponent is facing. And when lasers start connecting, damage does not disappear into an abstract health total. Armor vanishes from specific locations until somebody's carefully piloted war machine becomes a rapidly depreciating pile of salvage.

How the Game Works

Players maneuver BattleMechs across a hex map, using movement to find useful firing positions while making themselves harder to hit. Weapons have different ranges and attack probabilities, so distance, positioning, initiative, and facing all matter.

When attacks hit, damage is recorded directly on a BattleMech's record sheet. Armor is removed from individual locations such as the arms, legs, and torso, giving combat a physical sense of machines gradually being dismantled under fire.

The Quick-Start rules teach a deliberately streamlined version of BattleTech. The included laminated record sheets also provide a bridge toward the full game, with additional equipment information on their reverse sides when you are ready to move beyond the introductory fights.

The 2026 box places BattleTech's starting point in the modern ilClan era and includes new plastic miniatures of the Hammerhead and Kontio, while remaining compatible with existing BattleTech maps, miniatures, and the larger rules system.
