Cascadia: Alpine Lakes is a standalone spatial puzzle game for 1–4 players that builds on Cascadia's approachable tile-and-token drafting with a clever new dimension: elevation. Draft double-hex habitat tiles and wildlife, shape a Pacific Northwest ecosystem of forests, meadows, glaciers, and alpine lakes, then stack your landscape upward to create valuable high ground. The familiar calm of Cascadia is still here, but the added layering turns every placement into a richer puzzle about adjacency, height, wildlife, and the space you may desperately need three turns from now.
A Familiar Wilderness, Now With Altitude
The core decision remains wonderfully clean: choose a habitat tile and wildlife token, then decide where they belong. The difference is that your landscape no longer has to stay flat. Building upward can improve the value of lakes and wildlife, but every tile you stack changes the geometry of everything around it.
That makes Alpine Lakes a little more demanding than the original without losing the soothing rhythm that made Cascadia so inviting. You can spread outward to preserve flexibility, climb upward for elevation bonuses, chase a habitat scoring condition, or grab the wildlife you need before somebody else does. The scenery may be peaceful. Your brain probably will not be.
How the Game Works
On your turn, draft a paired habitat tile and wildlife token from the available display. Add the double-hex tile to your growing ecosystem, either expanding the landscape or layering it over previously placed terrain, then place your wildlife where its habitat allows. Five wildlife species and three alpine habitat types create overlapping placement goals, while lakes add another spatial consideration as you try to surround and elevate them effectively.
Each game combines habitat and environment scoring cards in different ways, so the shape of a strong ecosystem changes from play to play. You may need to rethink familiar Cascadia instincts as height, adjacency, habitat patterns, wildlife placement, and lakes all compete for the same limited real estate.
Why You’ll Love It
- A true standalone game: no copy of Cascadia is required.
- Preserves Cascadia's elegant draft-one-pair, place-one-pair turn structure while adding a noticeably deeper spatial puzzle.
- Layered habitat tiles create satisfying three-dimensional landscapes and meaningful decisions about when to build up versus out.
- Variable habitat and environment scoring objectives keep successful strategies from becoming automatic.
- Excellent for players who love peaceful themes but still want a game full of optimization, tradeoffs, and quietly agonizing placement decisions.
