Compress is a clever logic and information-management game for 1–7 players in which an ever-growing sequence of 0s and 1s must somehow fit inside the information you can encode with just eight cards. Rather than testing raw memory, Compress challenges you to invent your own notation system by arranging, rotating, overlapping, and interpreting simple cards as increasingly efficient reminders. The rules are tiny, the box is tiny, and the amount of brain space this game can occupy is wildly disproportionate to both.
Eight Cards. Too Much Information.
At first, keeping track of the sequence feels easy. A few digits? No problem.
Then it grows. Your neat little system starts running out of room. Maybe a sideways card can represent two digits. Maybe overlapping these two means something different. Maybe the black version of a card means one thing and the white version another. Ten minutes later, you have accidentally invented a private programming language that makes perfect sense to you and looks completely unhinged to everyone else.
Compress is a compact thinky puzzle about logic, encoding, spatial arrangement, and creating efficient information systems. It is a terrific fit for players who enjoy discovering clever solutions more than memorizing patterns handed to them.
The fun is not simply remembering the answer. It is looking at the strange little machine you built to preserve that answer and realizing that, somehow, it works.
How the Game Works
A sequence made from 0s and 1s grows as the game progresses. Your job is to reproduce that sequence correctly when required.
You have only eight cards available to help you record the information. Those cards use a small visual vocabulary of numbers and colors, but you are free to develop your own system for interpreting their positions, orientation, overlap, grouping, or other arrangements.
As more information arrives, your original notation may stop being efficient enough. You will need to revise it, compress ideas together, and find new ways to make the same limited physical tools represent a longer and longer sequence.
Penalty cards introduce additional front-and-back possibilities that can become part of your encoding system as well. Because nobody tells you how your notation is supposed to work, different players naturally discover completely different solutions.
Why You’ll Love It
- Turns a simple binary sequence into an unexpectedly creative logic puzzle.
- Rewards inventing systems rather than possessing an exceptional memory.
- Your notation can evolve throughout the game as the information becomes harder to manage.
- Different players naturally develop radically different solutions to the same problem.
- Plays solo or with groups of up to seven.
- Simple components create a surprisingly deep mental challenge.
- Compact Oink Games production makes it easy to bring almost anywhere.
- The breakthrough moment when a new encoding trick works is enormously satisfying.
