Forage is a 1–6 player roll-and-write tableau game about wandering the Pacific Northwest in search of mushrooms, berries, plants, recipes, and gifts worth bringing home. Instead of writing on one fixed sheet for the entire game, you continually add dry-erase cards to your personal tableau. That means the puzzle itself grows while you play: new trails appear, pantry shelves expand, gift requirements change, and a dice result that was ordinary three turns ago may suddenly trigger a very useful chain of bonuses.
Your Score Sheet Keeps Growing
That is Forage's real twist. You are not filling in boxes on the same static map from beginning to end.
Exploration cards create connected wilderness trails. Pantry cards give you jars and shelves to fill. Gift cards ask for exact combinations of ingredients. At the end of a turn, you choose which kind of new card to add, so you are partly designing the puzzle you will have to solve later.
There is a cozy theme here, but the decisions are quite thinky once several cards start feeding bonuses into one another.
How the Game Works
Each round begins by rolling the Foraging Dice and revealing a Journey Tile. Players choose a combination of the available dice and use it for one of three major activities: Exploration, Pantry storage, or Gift-giving.
Exploration has you draw paths through wilderness cards, with bonuses available for navigating and enclosing areas efficiently. Pantry cards turn gathered goods into a spatial puzzle of jars, rows, and columns. Gift-giving asks you to assemble exact ingredient combinations for immediate benefits and scoring.
Completing spaces and objectives can generate bonus actions, upgraded effects, and chained moves. After your turn, you add another Foraging card to your tableau, increasing both your opportunities and the number of things competing for your dice.
More than 90 different Exploration, Pantry, and Gift-giving cards, along with variable Goals and Journey Tiles, keep the shape of that tableau changing from game to game.
Why You’ll Love It
- The roll-and-write play area expands during the game instead of remaining a fixed sheet.
- Exploration, pantry storage, and gift-giving are three genuinely different spatial and resource puzzles.
- Bonus chains reward planning several moves beyond the die you are using right now.
- Choosing which new card to add lets players influence what their future scoring puzzle will look like.
- Beth Sobel's Pacific Northwest artwork fits the quiet foraging theme beautifully.
