Interstellar is a heavy 1–6 player science-fiction simulation about sending the generation starship Exodus on a one-way journey beyond the Solar System. Players manage human-machine Cyborgs, Avatars, technology, batteries, stress, aging, ship systems, and the accumulating hazards of a voyage measured in decades and generations. Everyone needs the Exodus to survive long enough to reach a viable destination. That does not mean everyone aboard agrees about which risks are acceptable, what humanity should become, or who deserves the most credit when the mission finally reaches Landfall.

Survive Together. Prepare to Win Separately.

Interstellar sits in the unusual space between cooperative survival game and competitive simulation.

A catastrophic decision can destroy systems the entire group needs. Radiation, mutiny, cancer, stress, erosion, runaway gray goo, risky experiments, and desperate dives near stars are communal problems because everybody is traveling on the same ship.

But the Cyborgs belong to players and can generate personal victory points. Avatars are generally more useful for keeping the mission functioning. That creates an uncomfortable long-term question: how much of your capacity goes toward getting humanity to another star, and when do you begin positioning your own people for what comes after arrival?

A Starship That Ages Along With Its Crew

The Exodus itself is not an indestructible board printed beneath the game. Its systems are represented by Blueprint placards that can deteriorate or be lost. Workers age. Batteries discharge. Technology changes what the crew is capable of doing. The passage of time is part of the mechanism, not just flavor text between turns.

That is also why Interstellar is considerably heavier than the average space-exploration game. It is interested in engineering, biology, politics, risk, and speculative science as interacting systems rather than as a backdrop for collecting blue cubes.

How the Game Works

Players control Cyborgs and Avatars aboard the Exodus and use worker placement and card-driven development to operate the ship, research technologies, manage hazards, explore prospective destinations, and prepare for eventual colonization.

Cyborgs are important to personal scoring but require careful timing around aging and the long duration of the voyage. Avatars perform much of the labor needed to keep the shared mission functioning. Augmentations and technological development change what both can accomplish.

The modular starship gradually suffers wear, accidents, radiation, stress, and other hazards. Players negotiate which risks to accept and which resources or systems deserve protection. Dice introduce uncertainty into some of those decisions, so an ambitious plan can produce either a scientific breakthrough or a new entry on the list of things no longer attached to the ship.

Eventually the mission reaches Landfall. The group must have cooperated well enough for humanity to arrive at all, but personal victory still depends on how successfully each player developed their own long-term position.

Interstellar is standalone, but it also belongs to ION and Sierra Madre's larger Bios and High Frontier lineage and can conceptually continue a civilization developed through those systems.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Treats interstellar travel as a decades-long survival and engineering problem rather than a quick jump between planets.
  • Semi-cooperative incentives create real negotiations because everyone needs the ship while still pursuing personal victory.
  • Aging, batteries, stress, ship erosion, and technology make the passage of time mechanically important.
  • The Exodus is a changing collection of systems that can degrade or disappear during the voyage.
  • Scientific and speculative concepts are integrated into the strategy rather than merely used as card names.
  • Designed for players who want a demanding simulation with unusual systems and consequential decisions.

Game Details

🧩 Players: 1–6
⏱️ Playtime: 60–240 minutes
🎂 Age: 14+
🗂️ Genre: Heavy science-fiction simulation, semi-cooperative strategy, worker placement, generation starship, tableau building
🎯 Complexity: Heavy; BGG weight is above 4/5 and the game intentionally models several interacting scientific, technological, and social systems
🔁 Replayability: Very high for the intended audience because ship development, hazards, technologies, negotiations, player incentives, and the voyage itself can unfold very differently
🎮 Great for fans of: High Frontier, Bios, Phil Eklund designs, hard-science simulations, heavy semi-cooperative games, and players who regard “the ship is slowly eroding” as an interesting strategic premise rather than a warning
