Misfit Heroes

Misfit Heroes is a 2–4 player card-crafting tableau game from designer Phil Walker-Harding where the characters literally change every time you set up the game. A transparent Character card is paired with an Attribute card inside a sleeve, combining two pieces of artwork and two sets of abilities into one newly invented resident of Absurdia. Your crew might contain combinations the previous game never had, and your job is to turn those oddballs into money, influence, completed Quests, and ultimately the most points.

The Characters Are Built Before You Play Them

This is the part to understand about Misfit Heroes: the transparent cards are not just a visual gimmick.

A Character provides one identity and ability. An Attribute supplies another. Layer them together and you get a new card with the effects of both pieces. With 96 Characters and 96 Attributes available, the possible pairings run into the thousands.

That means learning a fixed deck is less important than looking at the strange group assembled for this particular game and figuring out what those combinations are capable of doing together.

How the Game Works

Before play, Character transparencies are paired with Attribute cards in sleeves to create the Misfit deck. Players then recruit and play these combined characters into their own growing tableau.

Character effects can generate coins, draw or manipulate cards, and most importantly add influence in the Forest, Sea, Mountain, and City regions of Absurdia. Many cards become stronger when their banners, costs, abilities, or influence effects work together.

Build enough influence in a region and you can claim its Quest tiles for points and rewards. Since the available characters and Quests change, the combinations worth pursuing are not fixed from game to game.

The winner is the player who turns their improvised collection of heroes into the most valuable crew.
