Orbita is a tactical two-player card game of planetary movement, fixed-hand management, and winning by exactly the right amount. Rival astronomers manipulate four planets by playing groups of matching cards, competing to claim cards round after round. The catch is that you may never rearrange the cards in your hand, and dominating a planet too thoroughly can actually reduce what it is worth. In about 15 minutes, Orbita turns a tiny deck and four moving markers into a precise duel about timing, sacrifice, and the dangerous temptation to win harder than necessary.
Winning Too Much Is a Mistake
Orbita keeps presenting victories that are not quite as good as they look. Claiming a pile of cards feels useful, but final scoring rewards you for having more cards of a planet than your opponent by only a narrow margin. Crush them 6โ1 and that planet is barely worth anything. Edge them 6โ5 and suddenly those five opposing cards become your points.
The fixed order of your hand makes that balancing act even stranger. Matching cards that begin separated can become adjacent as other cards leave your hand, so every play changes what future groups you will be forced or allowed to use. You are not just deciding what to spend. You are sculpting the hand you will have three rounds from now.
How the Game Works
Each player receives 14 cards and must keep them in their original order for the entire game. The starting player plays 1โ3 adjacent cards of a single planet type and moves that planet the same number of spaces around the orbital track. The opponent then plays 1โ3 adjacent cards of a different planet and moves its marker.
Whichever played planet finishes in the stronger position wins the round, and that player collects all cards just played. Play continues until someone can no longer make a legal play. Then compare the collected cards planet by planet. For each planet, the player with fewer cards gives those cards to the player with more, and those transferred cards are the points. That unusual scoring system is the heart of Orbita: you want the majority, but you want your opponent to have almost as many cards as you do.
Why Youโll Love It
- A pure two-player design built around reading one opponent rather than scaling a multiplayer game down.
- Fixed hand order creates a clever planning puzzle without adding extra components or rules overhead.
- Final scoring makes narrow victories far more valuable than overwhelming ones.
- Individual rounds contain tactical wins, sacrifices, and opportunities to feed an opponent cards you want them to hold.
- Fast enough for immediate rematches, which is useful because the strategy becomes clearer the moment the first game ends.
