Starship Captains is a 1–4 player action-selection and engine-building Eurogame about taking command of a slightly battered starship and an even less experienced crew. Cadets, Ensigns, Androids, and Officers are assigned to different ship stations to fly across the galaxy, complete missions, fight pirates, install alien technology, and improve your standing with three galactic factions. Your crew members get promoted as they gain experience, which means the collection of rookies who barely knew where the engine room was at the start can become a surprisingly efficient machine by the end.
Your Crew Is the Action System
Starship Captains uses workers, but they do not simply sit on action spaces until the round resets.
Crew members have colors corresponding to different ship functions. Activate one and that crew member moves to the end of your ship's queue. Eventually they cycle back into service, so taking an action also changes which people will be available soon.
Promotions make the timing more interesting. Cadets can become Ensigns, and experienced crew can gain Officer status. Androids bend the normal color restrictions. A ship that initially feels understaffed gradually becomes much better at stringing together the jobs you actually want it to do.
How the Game Works
On your turn, activate one available crew member or use another permitted action. Different crew colors correspond to flying the ship, fighting pirates, repairing damage, and completing missions or other assignments.
Your starship moves around a variable galaxy filled with missions, artifacts, pirate ships, and faction opportunities. Missions require combinations of crew skills and reward successful captains with points, medals, faction reputation, and other benefits.
Medals promote crew members. Technology cards slot into your ship and can create engine-building combinations, making certain actions more productive or connecting one effect to another. Reputation with the three galactic factions unlocks additional rewards as your voyage continues.
The crew queue prevents you from endlessly using the same specialist. After a crew member acts, they move out of immediate availability and work their way back toward the front. Good captains are therefore managing both what the ship needs now and which crew members they want ready a few turns later.
The box also contains a dedicated solo system, so despite some early retailer listings describing Starship Captains as a 2–4 player game, the complete game officially supports 1–4.
Why You’ll Love It
- Your crew doubles as the action-selection system, giving character management a real mechanical purpose.
- Promotions let an inexperienced team noticeably improve during a single game.
- Alien technologies create satisfying engine-building combinations aboard your ship.
- Missions, pirates, artifacts, and faction tracks give the galaxy enough variety to make exploration feel purposeful.
- The tone is lighthearted space adventure, but underneath it is a solid medium-light Euro puzzle.
