The Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera is an asymmetric two-player trick-taking duel inspired by Gaston Leroux's classic novel. One player becomes the Phantom, attempting to complete a musical composition by winning and losing exactly the right tricks, while the other plays Christine, doing everything possible to ruin the score and escape his influence. Familiar follow-suit card play meets shifting trump priorities, forced card exchanges, and completely opposing objectives, turning a compact 15-minute game into a wonderfully tense battle over who should win each trick.

Sometimes You Need to Lose the Trick

The clever idea at the heart of The Phantom of the Opera is that the Phantom does not simply want to collect tricks. His musical score tells him who must win each one. Sometimes the Phantom needs victory. Sometimes Christine winning is exactly what the composition requires.

That completely changes how you look at a hand. Your highest card may be a problem. A weak card may be priceless. And because Christine can see the same score, she knows exactly what result the Phantom wants and can devote every card in her hand to making sure he does not get it.

How the Game Works

Players compete across two rounds of trick-taking. The leader plays a card and the other player must follow suit when possible. The Mask suit acts as trump, while the current section of the musical score can designate an even stronger super-trump suit.

The musical score shows the result the Phantom needs for each note. If the correct player wins the trick, the composition advances. If Christine successfully disrupts the required result, the Phantom loses valuable time and may even see earlier progress undone.

The Number on the Seal adds another layer of manipulation. When a card matching that number appears, cards are exchanged between the players in the middle of the hand. Suddenly the card you carefully planned around may belong to your opponent, while their unwanted card has become your problem.

The Phantom wins by completing the entire composition before the second round ends. Christine wins simply by leaving the score unfinished.
